How well is Costco performing from a financial perspective?
Even though Sam's Club has more
stores, Costco outperforms them it in sales and volume. In fiscal 2008, sales
per square foot at Costco's stores averaged almost $1,000, compared with $550
at Sam's Club.
Costco pays its employees generously
and offers attractive benefits and health-care packages, which might seem
costly on the surface, but in return the company is reimbursed with a
productive workforce and employee turnover of only around 6%. Costco generates
about $500,000 in sales per employee versus only $340,000 at rival Sam's Club.
