Lowry et al's (1999) article entitled School Violence, Substance Use, and Availability of Illegal Drugs On School Property Among US High School Students seeks to uncover what – if any – correlation exists between the presence of drug use and the incidence of criminal activity on America's high school campuses. Utilizing nearly eleven thousand high school students, this study examined the availability and use of tobacco, alcohol and marijuana and other illegal drugs as potential inciters of school violence, which was described as any of the following: weapon-carrying, physical fighting, having property stolen or damaged, being threatened or injured or absenteeism due to feeling unsafe.
