What
is My Philosophy Of Leadership?
Trying
to decide what defines a person as an ethical leader is not always something easily
done. Certain roles call for certain strengths and determining what makes one
successful or unsuccessful is a difficult task. Situational decision-making is
something that many face in the field of leadership. They must make a decision
based on the “here and now.” The decision made at that moment is what can
define the way in which the world views that leader. But the biggest question
of all may be, “How does that leader view himself?”
“We
live in a world where leaders are often morally disappointing.” (Ciulla, 2004)
I personally do not agree with this statement. I believe that there have been
many leaders who have demonstrated morality. I think that the best leaders in
history and in the world are those who have a vision, a goal, an idea. They
pursue their goal with a passion that far exceeds the passion of others. They
are able to focus on the end result and will do what needs to be done in order
to achieve it. They are also people who are able to build a group of followers
along the way and can inspire others to participate. Many times their passion
and love of the vision is what attracts others. It is difficult not to become
involved in something when the person leading the group is truly passionate
about the topic. This can be true even when the task at hand is something
treacherous. Hitler was able to inspire and lead many people to believe that
what he desired was the best idea for everyone involved. This did not make him
an ethical leader, but does serve as an example of what charisma and passion can
inspire.
