 In this paper the author will evaluate the
planning function of management at WorldCom. The author will also analyze the
legal and the ethical issues surrounding this company. This paper will explain
the impact that the social responsibility of management had as well as give
three factors that influenced the strategic, operational, contingency and
tactical planning involved in this company.
     WorldCom was the number two long distance
phone service in the nation behind AT and T. The function of planning at
WorldCom centered on public relations and a need to develop campaign and
political marketing as well as growth through acquisitions. WorldCom’s CEO
Bernie Ebbers became interested in long-distance phone service in 1983 (Beltran,
2002). Ebbers was instrumental in the success of WorldCom and with his purchase
of MCI in 1998 his company was rapidly becoming a success however, when his
attempt to buy Sprint was blocked by regulators this weakened the performance
of WorldCom in the soft market of telecom services (Beltran, 2002).
     The legal issues that surrounded WorldCom
were the liberal accounting practices, the falsification of financial documents
by top level management and greed (Moberg, Romar 2003). All ….
