Sandinista Legitimacy
           Since the formulation and writing of
the Monroe Doctrine in 1823, the US
has in essence proclaimed itself the parent of Latin
America. Later in history,
namely during and after the Cold War, the US took this stance towards most
small, undeveloped nations. The Monroe
Doctrine kept European nations and empires from re-colonizing Latin
America, but may have hindered the progression toward peaceful
sovereignty for the once colonies. Since
colonial control became outdated and economic control became the surrogate
system of control, the US
has maintained the power through its business interests and often the guise of
being the purveyors of democracy to fulfill our own national interests. Several times in history, the US has
chosen to label a country negatively as a response to the duly elected
government we may oppose. The Sandinista government in Nicaragua was one such
