ABSTRACT
Radiotherapy is the treatment of cancer using ionizing radiation. In an
installation of radiotherapy, there must be a medical physicist and the amounts
depending on the size of the installation and must understand the physical
processes, providing detailed advice and contribution to the functioning of a
multi-disciplinary team of radiotherapy. Ionizing radiation is potentially
harmful. Medical Physicists have dominant responsibility to reduce and minimize
the risks associated with it. By knowing the role of medical physics in nuclear
medicine is expected of students in particular and society in general want more
in studying medical physics.
The method used in this research is literature study method by
referring to data taken from literature, newspapers, books, and articles on the
Internet.
The results showed that Medical physicist was a
member of a team responsible for budgeting and procurement of new equipment.
The role of Medical Physicists in planning the installation of new equipment in
the design team include advice to the needs of the shield (shielding) to comply
with regulations in the licensing.
After the installation process, Medical Physicists
responsible for the commissioning of radiotherapy equipment before the
equipment used for clinical purposes. During
commissioning, the measurement is made to ensure that the performance,
functions, operation of safety interlocks for patients and staff and operation
of equipment, calibrate the dose monitor system, establishing safety operation,
checking the accuracy of the optical file system and measure the
characteristics of radiation dosimetry for the entire file.
The scope is very
vital that is done by the Medical Physicist Integrated Quality Assurance
Program to ensure the safety functions of all treatment equipment, which
includes brachytherapy equipment, simulators, and therapy treatment planning
system, including the use of computers for calculating dosage.
In addition, Medical
Physicists are also responsible for maintenance of all equipment effectiveness
of radiotherapy, both associated with technicians and companies associated with
the equipment. Also included in it if no replacement source of radionuclides
with a programmed schedule, for example, for Ir-192 every three months.
It can be concluded
that the roles and responsibilities of Medical Physicists in radioterap very
clearly how the need for appropriate minimum qualifications for a Radiotherapy
Installation in accordance with the large and small installation. Moreover,
radiotherapy is a method of treatment of patients not only clinical problem
alone, but also a matter of physics, so the partnership between doctors
radioterapist with medical physicists are needed every day. Even if it is a
necessity if you want success and the success of treatment with radiotherapy.
