Who is This Stranger?
“Mother died today. Or maybe it was yesterday, I don’t know. I received
a telegram from the rest home: MOTHER DECEASED. BURIAL TOMORROW. VERY TRULY
YOURS. It doesn’t say anything. Maybe it was yesterday” (Camus, The Stranger,
p.1, 1954).
Albert Camus develops his theory of the
absurd throughout this existential novel, which is based on his belief that
there is no meaning or absolute truth in life. Throughout The Stranger, Meursault is clearly an unapologetic individual, who
is unreflective, uncaring and moved only through sensory experiences (such as
swimming at the beach, or having sex with Marie), which is used to reinforce
Camus’ message that there are only relative truths in life.
This essay will be reflecting on the
different ways in which Camus’ portrays his beliefs concerning twentieth
century mankind, and the apparent hopelessness of human existence.
